Where You Stand

Coming Back

Returning after an absence rarely means returning to the same arrangement, and deciding what you want it to look like gives you something to propose.

Is any of a fortnight off ill paid?

The law where you are

Am I covered if I am hurt on their site?

The law where you are

What happens if I am away for three months?

The law where you are

Will the work still be there when I come back?

Four questions a person in this position actually asks. One of them has no answer anybody can give in advance, and nothing here fills a blank with a guess. Most people read this section for the first time in the week they need it.

When you cannot work · Practice

Returning after a long absence rarely means returning to what was there before. The work has been placed somewhere, the people have changed, and nobody has been holding the arrangement still.

The practical question in “Coming Back” is easier to handle when expectations and evidence are visible to both sides. For teams assessing time tracking software, time tracking software can provide time and project context, but the purpose should be disclosed, access limited and every consequential interpretation reviewed by a person.

Deciding in advance what you want the return to look like gives you something to propose rather than something to accept.

The Personnel Today employment articles offers a useful outside reference for “Coming Back”. It should help form better questions rather than replace advice based on the person’s actual working arrangement.

What has usually happened while you were away

The regular work went to somebody else, temporarily or otherwise. The person who briefed you may have moved. Budgets moved on a cycle that took no account of you.

None of that is hostility and most of it is not reversible by asking. Treating it as the starting position rather than as an injustice makes the conversation more productive.

Getting back in touch

Short, without apology, and with something concrete attached:

I am well and available again from the second week of March. Is there anything coming up that I could pick up?

No account of what happened, no reassurance about reliability. A message carrying an explanation invites a conversation about whether you are dependable.

Starting smaller than before

Often the realistic route and worth proposing yourself rather than waiting to be offered it. A single defined piece re-establishes that the work gets done without anybody having to make a large commitment.

It also lets you find out how much capacity you actually have, which after a long absence is frequently less than expected.

Being honest with yourself about capacity

The common mistake is accepting the previous volume on the first day back, because the money stopped and the backlog is frightening.

A return that collapses in week three costs more than a slower one. If the absence was health-related, this is the part worth being deliberate about rather than optimistic.

What to ask the client for

Three things that cost them little and help you:

  1. A clear statement of what work exists and when.
  2. Payment terms confirmed, because systems change.
  3. A named person, because the previous one may have gone.

All three are ordinary administrative questions and all three routinely go unasked, which produces a month of confusion.

If the work has gone

Entirely possible and not a verdict on you. Clients fill gaps and the replacement is now the incumbent.

The useful response is to ask whether anything else is coming and to treat this client as one of several rather than as the relationship. Where it was the only client, the article on having one client is the one to read next.

The references of your absence

Whether to explain, and how much. In most commercial relationships the answer is very little: you were unable to work, you are available now.

Detailed explanation is for people who want to be understood, and clients are generally not that audience. Where a longer absence genuinely needs context, one sentence is the right length.

Rebuilding the pipeline

Slower than people expect and it starts before you are fully available. Letting past clients know you are returning, a few weeks ahead, gets you into planning conversations that have already begun.

A message sent the day you are ready arrives after the decisions were taken.

The money shape of the first months

Income returns later than work does, because of the gap between doing and being paid. A month of work at the start of a return produces nothing for another month or two.

Plan the reserve over the whole return rather than to the first day of working, which is where people misjudge it.

Whether to go back at all

Worth asking honestly, particularly after a long or serious absence. Some people return to the same arrangement, some to a different mix of clients, and some decide the protections of a different category now matter more than they did.

None of those is a failure. An absence is one of the few moments when the question is genuinely open, and it closes again quickly.

What to write down before the first conversation

What you want: how much work, on what terms, from when. One paragraph, for yourself.

Going into the conversation knowing your own answer is the difference between proposing an arrangement and accepting whatever is offered, and after an absence the pull towards accepting anything is strong.

The part nobody can tell you

Whether the relationship survived. Clients rarely announce that they have moved on, and the signals are ambiguous: a slow reply may mean anything.

The honest approach is to ask once, directly, and to spend the energy elsewhere if the answer is vague. Waiting on an ambiguous relationship is the most expensive thing a person in this position can do with a month.
